15. DON’T! YOU CAN’T DO THAT!

Modal verbs for kids can be tricky because they change the tone of a sentence. Book 15: Signs and Rules helps students navigate these subtle differences by comparing strict imperative commands with helpful modal verbs like will/won’t, should/shouldn’t, and may/may not. 

The learning journey happens in two steps:

1. The Sign Phase: In this introductory stage, students are presented with 16 common warning and prohibition signs, each paired with a direct imperative (e.g., “No running!”). Below each sign is a profile of a specific professional—such as a doctor, teacher, lifeguard, or police officer. Students must use logic and context to determine which professional would be responsible for enforcing each specific warning.

2. The Situation Phase: The lesson then transitions to a vibrant, real-life illustration that brings these signs to life. Students analyze a detailed scene and read a series of related texts. These texts demonstrate how to transform “blunt” commands into professional and polite communication using modal verbs (e.g., must, should, may not, ought to). This allows students to practice delivering strict rules with the nuance required in a workplace setting.

By connecting visual signs to illustrated scenarios, students learn the logic of rules, advice, and permission. This approach helps ESL learners understand when to be firm and when to be polite.
