How to Use Vocabulary Book15
Making the Most of This Book
In this book, your child are ready to expand their skills with three essential helping verbs: can, should, and will. These verbs help express ability, advice, and intention in English. This book focuses on the negative forms—can’t, shouldn’t, and won’t—and reinforces them through clear, structured activities that build on previously learned “Don’t ~!” patterns.
Tips for Parents
✅ Review all warning signs before reading.
Prior to reading the book, guide your child through all 15 common warning signs. Discuss the meaning of each sign and prompt your child to share their prior knowledge about them.
✅ Read the meaning of each warning sign!
Under each warning sign, there is a sentence with “Do not ~!”. Have your child read it out loud and think about how strong the rule is. This helps them feel the difference between can’t (not allowed) and shouldn’t (not a good idea).
✅ Practice “won’t”
After reading, ask your child:
“Would you do it?”
“What would you do in this situation?”
When they answer, guide them to use won’t to show a decision or promise:
“I won’t touch the heater.”
“I won’t play ball here.”
This step helps children see the meaning of won’t in real-life situations.
✅ Choose the right meaning!
For each warning sign, children choose the correct meaning from three options that use can’t, shouldn’t, or won’t. This strengthens their understanding of the helping verbs in context.
After choosing, discuss:
Why is this option correct?
Why are the other options not correct?
This reinforces comprehension and gives a clear understanding of rules, advice, and decisions.
✅ Repeat and reinforce!
Go through the warning signs again, letting your child read, discuss, and respond. The more they practice, the more confident they become using can’t, shouldn’t, and won’t naturally.
