How to Use Vocabulary Book10

Making the Most of This Book

This book helps young ESL learners master “There is/There are” structures in question patters which are, ‘Is there!?’ and ‘Are there~?’ with more location words. Each set is made of a question and an answer so you can help your child with a lot of questions and help them answer to each question.

Tips for Parents

Check if your child remembers how to talk about locations!

Ask your child whether they can say where something or someone is using the “There is/There are” pattern. This helps them recall how to describe locations in simple English sentences before moving on to question forms like “Is there…?” and “Are there…?”

✅ Introduce the question patterns “Is there~?” and “Are there~?”

Your child has already learned how to make questions with the be verb. Now, remind them that forming “There be” questions works the same way—just switch the order of there and the be verb. For example:

There is a cat → Is there a cat?

There are toys → Are there toys?

This gentle reminder helps them feel confident as they practice asking questions about locations.

Encourage your child to read the book again and again!

From my teaching experience with young learners, using the “there be” structure doesn’t come easily at first. Children often need extra time and repeated practice to use it confidently when they speak. That’s why re-reading the book is so helpful—it gives them many chances to practice both the question and answer patterns with “There is/There are.” The more they read, the more naturally these sentences will come to them.
