How to Use Vocabulary Book9
Making the Most of This Book
This book helps young ESL learners master the location words in, on, and under using “There is/There are” structures through a fun and engaging magic-show format. Five different magicians perform simple transformation tricks with three balls, allowing children to repeatedly see and practice each location word in context. Children are encouraged to describe what they see on each page using sentences like “There is a ~ in/on/under ~” and “There are ~ in/on/under ~.”
Tips for Parents
✅ Teach your child that there are two kinds of “there” in English!
Your child probably already knows here and there as words that show location. But in There is/There are, there is different. It doesn’t indicate a place—instead, it is used with the be verb to show that something exists. Understanding this helps children correctly use There is/There are without confusing it with location.
✅ Practice “There is/There are” with things at home!
Ask your child to look around the house and talk about what they see. They can say things like:
“There is a table there.”
“There is a sofa there.”
“There are books there.”
“There are pictures there.”
This fun activity helps them learn how to use there to show both existence and location, and makes making sentences easy and natural!
✅ Look and point: “in,” “on,” and “under”!
As you go through the magic show pages, ask your child to point to where things are. Help them see and say the words in, on, and under. This makes learning location words fun and easy!
✅ Reinforce location words with a fun game!
Encourage your child to move around the house and describe their position using in, on, and under. For example:
“I’m on the sofa.”
“I’m in the house.”
“I’m under the table.”
You can also guide your child to describe other things using There is/There are + location word, making it a fun way to practice both movement and language at the same time.
✅ Let your child read the book again and again!
The more your child reads the story, the more confident they become using There is/There are with location words. Encourage them to read it repeatedly to strengthen their understanding and fluency.
